Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Russell Jones on February 28, 2012:

McChesney and I used to sing the chapel choir Sunday after Sunday. He and I were both basses, but I believe he had the deeper voice. He used to clown around a lot. Of course the ornate choir stalls are deep, and we used to pull ourselves down and sleep in between hymns, while meanwhile the commandant of cadets in the first row would crane his neck as much as he could without being too obvious to see if we were sleeping. Yes. McChesney used to say his ambition was to be a frog --- to have a really low bass voice, that is. I remember his spirit and his strength and his sense of fun. We didn't have contact beyond that, we were in different regiments. I've never forgotten him though.
