Be Thou At Peace

It was July 1970 when I was a "know nothing" plebe and Tom and I were in the same squad during beast barracks. We became close friends during those difficult times, so much so that when we were allowed our first visit from "outsiders" and my parents could not make the trip, Tom was nice enough to share his dad with me. His dad was a great guy, and I quickly saw where Tom got his gracious ways from. It was so good to be able to relax and let our guard down for that short visit. Tom's dad regaled us with stories of when he went to West Point and assured both of us that we too would survive. Although I left after the first semester to follow my dreams of playing football elsewhere, I have never forgotten those times and those experiences, and most of all, the fond memories of youth and those who came into my life. Maybe someday Tom, I, and his dad can touch base again and share a laugh or two about those days gone by. |
