Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Holly Johnson III on July 20, 2010:

I'm 56 years old now and I still have a fairly large scar on my left elbow. I earned it. I stood in against Kingsley when I was only 14 and a new Sophomore at Eau Gallie High School. He was the fastest pitcher I had ever faced and I made him work. I fouled off about seven pitches in every direction and finally he nailed me with a fastball on top of my left elbow. It peeled the skin back and left seam marks on my elbow which grew to 3 times its size for several days.

When he realized he had hit me, he threw off his glove and ran up to me to make sure I was OK and I really wasn't (it hurt like all hell). He was so apologetic, concerned and sincere about my condition that I thought I would play with this guy anytime and anywhere. We really didn't get the chance to play together much after that.

I'll always wear this scar as a badge of pride. Kingsley was an exceptional man and I will always remember him. As Rick Cable stated earlier, he was truly a great person. We had "Surfers", "Cleatheads", "Gearheads", "Eaggheads" and everything in between. He seemed to go beyond all that, even with the Vietnam war raging so hard and the draft going so strong. I watched every game he played at Army that I could. I'll never forget him, he has influenced my outlook and the way in which I live my life!
