Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Clay Edwards on December 27, 2021:

I met MOE on 1 July, 1971. We were roommates, along with 2 others, for Beast Barracks. We suffered under the attentive ministrations of Cadet Jimmie Silcox of Company H-1. But we apparently learned something because all four of us made it to the end and graduated. We did all 4 go to Fourth Regiment though, a smart thing to do. I remember getting both of us ripped pretty well at the tables one time, all due to the "confusion" of his name. I made a reply, at the proper time per the 4th Class rules, but I called him Everett. That's what he told us all to call him, as that is what everyone had always called him. He had commented that he grew up as a kid with three first names, Malcolm and Owen and Everett. Well, one of the Firsties at the table heard me and went ballistic on me for using his last name. MOE spoke up to defend me, and got ripped apart for speaking when unspoken to. None of us Plebes ate that meal. Again. We all decided he needed to be called Malcolm, at least for Beast. As I ran into MOE over the next 46 months or so, we always laughed about that meal, though not the hunger it prolonged, and wondered what Jimmie Silcox had to say now, or whether we even cared. I haven't seen MOE for many, many years now, but I do look fondly on those two months we roomed together, and the aid he rendered to many clueless shoe-shiners, as long as we didn't mention where it came from, Texas A&M. Rest in peace, roomie. You did well.
