Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Timothy A. Mathis MD on June 8, 2016:

I was from northern New Jersey and am a member of the Class of 1979. I stayed at the Thayer the night before reporting to Beast where CDT Cuellar was to be a first detail cadre. That night some of us soon to be New Cadets took a walk around, knowing that we would not be that free for a while, just to sightsee. We were walking north on Thayer Road when we encountered CDT Cuellar going south. Quite the figure in white over grey he stopped us rather obvious pre Beaners and asked if we were here in advance of R Day to which of course we replied "Yes". One of our group asked if he had any advice for us. I have never forgotten that moment and what he said. He simply said, "Never be afraid to be a man." I was aware of who he was all during my plebe year and admired his demeanor from afar. He embodied the best of what being a Cadet was all about. God Bless.
