Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kevin Scherrer on February 5, 2010:

Greg Brecher and I were assigned as Company A-2 roommates in the fall of 1976, in the wake of the post-scandal shuffle. Although we'd both been in 4th Regiment previously, we didn't know each other very well. Nonetheless, we hit it off right from the start.

Neither Greg nor I were excited about participating in the Leadership Development process of Firstie Year. We lived in an isolated room on the 6th floor of Central Barracks, safe from likely OC visits and far enough away from distracting plebe noises.

I was focusing on lacrosse and Greg was focusing on his new car, which he was partially rebuilding in the empty room next to ours. The smell of carburetor solvent was heavy in the air most nights, occasionally interrupted by the smell of cheeseburgers that we cooked illegally on a small grill I had. Greg and I were active participants in a range of A2-sponsored practical jokes that year, from setting Steve Sykes on fire to dressing up the George Washington statue as Santa Claus. Mornings were usually spent over in Grant Hall, where Greg and I would link up with Kurt Andrews and other H-4 alumni to devour donuts, coffee, and gossip. It was a good year, indeed.

Regretably, I lost touch with Greg following our graduation. I headed off to flight school and Germany, and Greg left the Army shortly about that time.
Life went on.

Greg Brecher was a compassionate friend to all. His enthusiasm for life was matched only by his artistic talent and positive outlook. I know I speak for many, when I say "I miss him already."

My heartfelt condolences to Greg's wife Becky and the rest of his family.

God bless you, Roommate.
