Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William Stefan on September 9, 2021:

I met Mike in 1973, when he was 18 years old and a Plebe at West Point. We were very close at West Point. People are the product of their experiences and West Point had a major impact in shaping our lives, behaviors, and actions.

At West Point, I coached the D-3 swim team and Mike was the best swimmer on the team. What made Mike truly stand out was his drive and determination to do his best in each swimming event. Mike was a truly a winner, not just in swimming, but in life. He inspired me and everyone on the team.

Mike had a big heart, not just competing in the water, but also helping and being kind to those he knew at West Point, during his career in the Army, and beyond. Mike cared about people. I saw and experienced this first-hand! Mike was a beautiful soul and one of my best friends. He helped me and many others.

Mike was funny, sharp, intelligent and a wonderful person that loved to make people smile and laugh, all while he was laughing. He made me laugh many times, especially when life was tough and especially when I and others needed it most.

He was always ready with positive feedback, practical solutions, and could be counted on to be ethical, loyal, and dedicated. He was ready to stop whatever he was doing to talk through anything. I could always count on him.

He did not dwell on the pain he went though in life, but kept conversation light and positive. You could hear him smile when he talked. His heart was full of love, compassion, and generosity.

After we graduated, we stayed in touch in Germany and later by phone, but as the distance and years passed, we saw less of each other. I missed Mike then and even more now.

It was my honor to know Mike and I am grateful to be one of many who called you a true friend.

Mike, thank you very much for the memories, your friendship, help, and caring for me and others you knew.
