Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Joe McGurty on October 13, 2021:

My dad was possibly the hardest-working person I've ever met, with the exception of maybe my sister, Laura, who inherited that trait from him. Whether it was his job, coaching our baseball teams, or being a father he always gave everything 100 percent. He was an intense guy, but also had a great sense of humor and was quick with a joke (especially if it was at my expense). He taught me how to bust chops with the best of them, and to have thick skin.

I have always looked up to him because of his many accomplishments. From his appointment to West Point and service in the Army, to his degrees in engineering and law, he left quite a legacy. If you were to ask him though, the thing he was most proud of were his children. In his later years he was happiest watching my youngest brother, Sean, play hockey or my youngest sister, Kaitlyn, play soccer.

A final thing that will always stick with me is that in the end he was not afraid. I got to spend some time with him a couple of weeks before he passed away, and he spent that time sharing his final thoughts and wishes.

I love my father very much, and he will be deeply missed.
