Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Michael Fahnestock on November 6, 2009:

Having known Larry from his early Camp Buckner days on the football field, I am so thankful for the bond that grew between us. Being from Berwick (the football capital of PA) he brought an ability with his heart that far exceeded his 5'8" body frame. I got to know his family and he was one of many football playing brothers: Bobby Duke, Jon, Syracuse and his sister cheerleader for the Berwick Bulldogs.

Larry and I would finish practice and the meal and head off to my room for our nightly backgammon matches. Then as we matured, they became cribbage matches. Loved the game, but the company is what made the game pleasurable.

Being from PA also, and in the league Berwick played, we took pleasure in knowing the SE and FLK were from the SVC (Susquehanna Valley Conf). The pride and on the field memories I'll always possess regarding my football experiences at Army have a foundation with Larry.

Like so many of us when I got a call from Washington regarding what was going on, I just could not believe it could be Larry. He had maybe 2% body fat (if that) would come home at Thanksgiving and run in the Berwick 10 mile Turkey Trot, and not just run. His miles would fall between: 4:45 to 6 minutes. He was a physical specimen and leader that led by example.

Larry was a leader as evidenced by his below the zone promotion progress. Despite the Army, Football, whatever, Larry was the brother I never had (2 sisters). So often I think of Larry when I went to see my high school beat Berwick this year, I asked some people about Larry. I talked to a girl who was in his class and she said how was a sweetheart of a classmate.

God had a calling for a leader and he knew Larry was the kind of Leader who would find a way to stand out among his angels. I can only say thank-you to him for allowing him to be the kind of teammate, friend, whose memory I will cherish till I am called to be the angel on the other side, keeping us intact.
