Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Oscar Mendez on December 8, 2005:

Back in 87-89, I was Bn XO of the unit Doug was assigned to in Germany. I remember him as an intelligent, hard-working young LT who got along with everyone. I liked Doug because he was unpretentious, sincere and stayed one-step ahead of me. He also was astute and appreciated the finer things in life. One fond recollection I have is one day he was admiring my watch and asked if he could take a closer look. I took it off my wrist and handed it to him. As he was admiring the stainless steel bracelet, I said to him "it's a fake Rolex" to which he looked up at me, gave me a sheepish smile and replied "no it's not, I can tell the difference". He then went on to say he wanted to own one someday. Doug, I hope you got your Rolex and everything else you dreamed of, if not in this life, in the next one. Take care buddy.
