Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tim W. on March 10, 2012:

COL John M. McHugh was a dynamic and engaging leader. A tremendous human being, he was always genuinely interested in how you were doing, in how he could make things better for you. He promoted me to Sergeant First Class. I served as his BN EOL at Fort Rucker, and in over 21 years (and counting) of active Army service, I cannot say that I have met a leader or a man who compares to COL McHugh.

Though I was not serving in the same unit with him in Afghanistan, I was there in Kandahar at the time of his death. It was in reading the Stars and Stripes that I discovered that he was in that convoy in Kabul. I immediately left our TOC so I could go outside and cry for the man and his family. If you were one of his Soldiers, he made you feel like a part of his family, and I was deeply affected by his loss. I know it has been a few years now, but being back at Fort Rucker reminds me of being around him, and of what he meant to so many of us.

Thank you for everything, and God bless you and your family, Sir.
