Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Stephen Bates on July 15, 2017:

I first met then CPT Jim Meisinger in Baumholder, Germany, I was a Platoon Leader in Bravo Co (Boarhogs) in 1992. Newly arrived from the Advanced Course and CAS3, Jim would eventually become the Alpha Company Commander, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry - 1st Armored Division. Admittedly a little intimated by this very fit officer, sporting not only a CIB, but his blood badge from the 1st Ranger Battalion, he was the epitome of kindness and class -- and exuded raw competence without the jerk mentality so prevalent in the zero-defect Army of the early 90s. My best memory was a long conversation with him at the night land navigation course, the battalion was going through training for the EIB, and he had these two GIANT Great Danes with him at the finish check-in table. We spoke for almost 90 minutes waiting for the last stragglers to come in. Sad that he didn't get to enjoy his well deserved retirement with his lovely wife Shannon after such a distinguished career. RIP Ranger, you've earned it.
