Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dave Duffy on February 20, 2001:

Sadly, Death is part of what we do in the Army. I have seen way too much of it, had thought I had become enured to it by now. Went to a memorial service for a 3d Group soldier the other week who had died doing his duty in some worthless stink hole. You learn to accept the danger as part of the job, a risk worth taking for your country, for what you love to do. Hell, you figure it won't happen to you anyway. But Robo's death made me pause and caused me grief. Bad things sometimes happen to good people, and they don't come any better than Rob and Holly. He died doing what he loved in the service of his country. Reading his eulogies, I wonder if he knew the tremendous impact he had on his fellow man. We can only hope to have the same.

I met Rob over a beer in Barth Hall, the last time I saw him was over a beer in his back yard. I hoisted a Guinness at the news of his death. I had the honor to serve with him. It was my honor that he called me friend.
