Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John Olson on February 13, 2022:

Bob, Rob, 21 years and finally I have the found some words to write. I think of you and miss you every day. I am writing a story about my life and through this process have been thinking back about my life and the many people that have made an impact on it. From the moment you came into this world, I knew you were special and would have a great deal of influence on and pride in my days growing up. My little Brother Bob, or should I say younger Brother, because you were anything but little. You always reached for the top in all that you did in your short time here with us physically. You were fun, smart, pretty handsome, and had a personality that never shut off. You always seemed to find a way to schmoose your way out of a tight spot, or to handle an impossible situation with the greatest outcome not only for you but those of us that you loved or cared for so deeply. The thing is you did this without those of us really knowing you were doing it until the final outcome.
The last time we hunted together, in late afternoon it started to snow. We were way back by the old Beaver dam and with the weather changing rapidly, knew we needed to move out. We both were familiar with the country we were in and knew the blue grey fading light of the day meant time to get back out of the woods. As we headed out on the edge of the Spruce swamp and into the Ash swale, with you in the lead, we both knew to be on the lookout for a deer. I followed and stepped in each one of your tracks. When I slightly tapped your shoulder and said quietly Bob! You froze in place your eyes scanning the swale looking for a deer that I had spotted and you some how missed! Then you turned to look at me with that puzzled wondering look I had seen from you as to say what you see that I don't see? I pointed up to a tree branch where a big white Snowy Owl was perched just above your head. When you looked up, I got that half crocked smile that I have seen from you for so many years! You are my HERO always. Miss you every day.
