Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robert Steed on March 22, 2021:

I am not a veteran. I had dreams of joining a service academy and serving along your side like we talked about at Davis High School where we were chums. Cary was the champion of the common man. He had no avarice, pride or greed. He wore his overalls and his Elmer Fudd had with selfless dignity. He was confident but caring. He was a friend to all and to all to all he was loved and respected. We played on the line together at DHS and we wrestled in weight classes next to each other. We ate endless cheese burgers and Bowman's donuts. He lifted my spirits. We even worked side by side building foundations after our missions. I always thought Cary and I would be side by side still. But life took us in different directions.

We lost touch when he moved to New York and started his family. I called a couple of times when a persistent thought came to me to reach out. When I last reached out, he spoke of his feet being partially amputated. His diabetes was out of control. I was shocked but confident that Cary would go on with his distinctive cool demeanor. Then four years after he died, I hear about it. No obituary in the paper. No notice from his family in Utah. My heart sunk. Cary, you are my dear friend. I am sorry I did not work harder at our friendship. Saddest of all is that we did not grow old together with our memories. I will always remember you for the way you were and how because of that my life was blessed.
