Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Joel Allmandinger on July 25, 2008:

Steve lived across the hall from me 1st Semester of our Firstie year - we were on staff together and Steve was the battalion executive officer. I had never met him before that time, but was immediately impressed with him as a leader, athlete and friend. Somehow, he always found a way to make our staff meetings both enjoyable and meaningful (if only half the managers in my life had that skill!)...I remember he told me he was going to run the Marine Corps Marathon that Fall. I knew he was an outstanding baseball player, but was skeptical about his abilities as a runner. Since I had completed the race the previous year, I thought I'd offer him some training advice. He said, "oh, I'll just go out and run a few times before the race, no big deal." You've got to be kidding me, I thought, this is a marathon, not a morning jog. A month passed and I saw Steve after the race. "How'd you do?" I asked. "Somewhere around 3:30" he replied nonchalantly. My jaw dropped - he'd achieved that pace without so much as a few training runs. Amazing.

That was Steve, a gifted athlete and leader; unassuming and humble in his achievements; a guy who made the people around him better.
