Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Anonymous on September 22, 2010:

It has been years since I've seen Paul, though I've been in contact infrequently over the years and, with the onslaught of social networking, was more than pleased to see him settled into a great life with a gorgeous family and a successful career. Though I wouldn't consider that we were the closest of friends at school, we were in the same company our junior and senior years and often ended up sitting together at company tables grumbling about bad food, random irritants, and anything else that made the news that day. I had an affinity for Paul's candor and commitment . . . and enjoyed his sarcasm - we got on quite well. He always struck me as someone who transcended the 'BS' that was the daily grind/pomp and circumstance. He appeared to have a bigger goal in mind - I admired his focus. In the last few years, the FB connection made it easy for me to reach out, say hello, and play catch up. We touched base from time to time with short comments and greetings. Photos of Paul, Susan and Madeline made me chuckle. By all appearances, he had his hands full!

I was devastated to hear of Paul's passing. Beyond being an excellent officer and a leader of soldiers in an extremely difficult time in our Nation's history, he was a good man. He will be remembered as a good man - and that, in my book, is the highest compliment.

All this being said, if my last impressions of Paul from '99 serve me correctly, I believe he would bristle at being highlighted in this forum (or any forum for that manner). Sorry, Paul . . .

To Susan and the entire Carron family, I offer my sincere condolences. I pray the strength of family, good friends, and your faith carries you through this difficult time. May the strength of Paul's memory bring you many smiles and may your children be the vessels by which his memory stays alive. You remain in my thoughts.

Be thou at peace.
