Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Patrick on October 24, 2003:

Dave was my teammate on the USMA swim team for my first three years at the academy.

I remember towards the end of my sophmore year Dave and I were walking back from the pool late one night after practice. Dave had a tough time making the traveling squad his first two years at the academy and I figured if anyone could relate to how I was feeling it would be him. I told him I was thinking about quitting at the end of the season. He got real quiet and then without even looking at me just said, "That's fine, you go be a slug for the next two years then."

My mind had been all but made up. I told myself that I didn't care what anyone thought. But his simple perserverance over his three years made his opinion of me more important than anyone else's. If nothing else, he swam just to prove he could. He never quit a season, never quit in a practice, never even quit in a single set. And because of him, neither did I.

Thanks Dave,
Pat
