Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Michael Jeroslow on November 5, 2003:

I had the privilege of meeting David my senior year at Westlake High in Austin when he joined the swim team as a freshman. That was a long time ago, but when I heard about David passing away it brought back a lot of fun memories. What stands out the most in my mind is what I remember of how it felt being in David's presence. The upperclassmen on the swim team always enjoyed giving the freshman hell just because they were freshman. But David, he got away with the least amount of ridicule. There was a reason for this, of course. It comes as no surprise to me that he became an officer in the armed forces, because his actions and demeanor with those around him was exceptional- he was respectful of everyone but at the same time demanded the same respect for himself. I have no doubt in my mind that this trait was something that David continued to share with others in his life as he progressed through the remainder of high school, West Point, and the Army.
My condolences to the Bernstein family, who I have fond memories of growing up in Austin.
