Be Thou At Peace

Posted by "Mikey" Costanzo on February 11, 2005:

I have been reluctant to read these euliges until now; thank you to everyone. I had the honor of speaking at Joe's funeral 29 JAN 05 in Reedley, CA. I wanted to share what I said:

Good Morning. I'd first like to say Thank You for everyone coming to the service today. I know that Joe is watching with his one and only beautiful smile; you know, the one that makes you smile no matter what mood you're in. For many of you, Joe was a friend, a classmate, or a teammate, or a roommate, or a fellow soldier, or like a brother, without the blood. To me, he was all of the above. For those who don't know me, my name is Mike Costanzo, or as Joe more affectionately called me, Mikey. Joe lived his life to its fullest with no regrets. He cherished the opportunity to serve his country and loved every minute of it. He'd call me complaining about work and how late he had to stay all the time, and as a good friend should, I wouldn't let him get away with it. I used to say, "Wow, Joe you must be the hardest working Captain in the Army; I wish I could be like you." Joe was a natural leader and definition of a self-starter. Just being around Joe made you feel like a better person and coupled with his one and only charm made you want to be around him constantly. He was one of the most compassionate and caring guys you could ever meet. There was no sacrifice too big if there was something you needed. Simply, he personified what it means to be a best friend. I love you Joe, always, and I'll see you again in heaven.

There are no words.

If Joe could've talked to me after I sat down, he would've said, "Good Job, Mikey," pause, "but I could've done it better." Of course he could.

Miss ya bud, see you soon.

Mikey
