Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Doug Miller on May 2, 2008:

Drew Pearson, Mike Flanigan, and I were roommates in Lee Barracks at West Point for the first semester of Plebe year. Drew was coming from the prep school and had some prior service Military Police experience which was certainly helpful to Mike and me as Drew coached us on the basics to survive that year. Drew had a great sense of humor and the three of us enjoyed coming up with pranks to play on Kris Lewis, our friend the next room over, and John Faunce who lived somewhere else in the barracks. Drew certainly enjoyed laughing as our practical jokes played out and made for some good times during that tough year (most of which should only and will only be mentioned over a few beers and not this forum).

Drew was a by the book kind of guy, who liked to do things right. He told the first stories I heard about being an enlisted guy in the Army and what life was like for a Soldier. I am sure that his experiences coming up through the enlisted ranks made him a better officer and look out for his Soldiers on several levels.

Mrs. Pearson. I have not met you, but do know that Drew and you were married shortly after graduation. Several times over the past few years I got a few updates from Barry Huston, who was with Drew at Fort Benning and in Hawaii and was glad to hear that your family was doing well. I am so sorry that your family and the Army lost Drew this week. I sincerely want you to know that Drew was a great roommate to have during Plebe Year. He took care of me and helped me in countless ways from shining shoes and brass to studying for big tests. He spent his own time to look out for me. I would not and will not ever forget his friendship and the special bond that plebe roommates share for life. Especially Drew.
