Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Christopher Thomas on May 3, 2008:

I met Drew as a Prepster, like so many others that year (224 of us to be exact). I had the good fortune of being assigned the same sponsor as Drew, and we spent a lot of great times hanging out with the McFarland's. Drew was always one with a joke or a good natured jab that you found you couldn't help but laugh at even if you were the one he was poking at. He truly was a driven man; he faithfully ran just about every day at the Prep school, rain, snow, whatever, and he always wore those goofy tights during the winter, but I guess they made him go faster because none of us could catch him. I lost track of Drew after graduation, as he moved into the light world and I went off to Hood as a Tanker, but lo and behold he showed up in the 7-10 CAV TOC at Camp Taji in 2006 and took over as our S-1. It is comforting when you know that someone of Drew's caliber is on a task because you know that it WILL be done to standard, and it humbles you a bit because you hope deep down inside that you can live up to the high standards he holds himself to. Drew, we had a tough summer and fall there at Taji, but I knew there was no better man to make sure that our fallen troopers and their battle buddies were taken care of. I was proud to see you take command of HHC/1-22 and I knew that your soldiers would be the best led in the brigade. As all of us can attest, Drew was a lead by example, from the front, get the job done guy and he died as he lived his life. We can all only hope that when our time comes that it can be said "well done" of our lives. Drew's was a life lived well, and we are all better off for having known him. Jo, my heart goes out to you and your little ones. I will honor Drew at his memorial here in Iraq. My prayers go out to you and your children. May God watch over you and protect you in your time of need. Drew, I will see you on the high ground.
