Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ian Grimstad on May 12, 2008:

Drew is a great man and I am privileged to call him a friend. Our time together as friends was short, but because it was a deployment the many moments we shared were condensed and have since crystallized in my mind. My memories may be a generalization of a short period of time but what I remember most is that Drew Loved the Army and he Loved his Family.
Drew was a superhero in the true sense of the word. He was a fighter for all things right. He was an incredibly smart man, and I remember more than a few times when in a meeting of some kind or another he seemed to be the last man standing, stubbornly, for a cause he was sure was right; and whether we ended up following his influence or not, it usually turned out that he was.
To Drew’s family: I didn’t know you well, but did know how much your Dad passionately loved you. Immediately your Dad struck me as a very mature and grounded person. What I came to know over time, however, was that what kept him vigilantly tied to truth and right was not so much an innate sense, as it was a true and deep love for You. He always knew that he was not alone; that someone out there counted on him being right. You were the rock on which he was grounded, unshakable. Drew meant to do right by you, and nothing else mattered.
I will miss you Andrew. I will miss that in even the most stressful moments I could count on you for a glance, a smile, a laugh. I will miss just knowing you’re around…knowing that you’re out there doing the right thing.
