Be Thou At Peace

Posted by 1LT Ryan Beissinger on October 11, 2007:

CPT Shimp,

What can I say Sir...ever since I met you as my Buckner platoon leader, you were always the example of what right looked like. You outdid all of us in rifle PT…all the time. You encouraged us when morale was low, and smiled in the face of a challenge. Till this day, I can still remember you confidently walking to class and picking me out of the sea of cadets every once in a while to say hi, and asking me how classes were going. That meant a lot to me as a cadet…knowing that an upperclassman, who I deeply respected, cared about my wellbeing and success at the Academy. Even though he was no longer in my chain of command, he would take time out of his run to class to give me advice and encouragement. I was proud to have been led by such a man. He was one such person that I felt honored to call “Sir.” I lost touch with Cadet Shimp for some time, until we had the chance to meet again at Fort Rucker for West Point’s Founders Day dinner in March of 2007. Huddled around a beer keg after the formal dinner, we both had some good laughs and shared some memories about West Point, flight school, and the Army. Little did I know that that would be the last time we would see each other. I wish I could have told him how much I respected him. But, as I look back on things, I feel as though he knew it. It breaks my heart that CPT Shimp’s family, the Army, and the world has lost such a great man. You were truly an inspiration to me Sir, and I will always remember you.
“Be thou at peace.”
