Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Roy Cowherd on February 6, 2007:

I didn't know Leonard or Charles, but my father, Major Robert Henry Cowherd, knew his grandfather. The concentration of Cowherds in Kentucky all came from the same group in Virginia.

We have an extreme military tradition and unless they were 4F'ed, I know of no Cowherd men in my neighborhood not to have served all the way back to the Civil War. It's kind of shocking to just be reading the NY Times and see in the Names of the Dead column a distant cousin with the same odd name.

In any case, mixed with the sadness of loss is pride in the person and the efforts they made and calls they answered. I have twin Cowherd sons and while I cannot imagine the sadness of one to lose the other, I would still be incredibly proud for either of them to have achieved what Leonard did.
