Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bill Gallagher on May 4, 2005:

I was a junior officer who served under Jake Gutting during my tour with the 2/68th Armor. It was my privilege to have ochestrated his change-of-command ceremony when he left the 2/68th. It was a "rolling review" out in the field with every vehicle in the battalion participating. Jake was my idea of a leader - I have never worked for another man (in or out of the military) who possessed his leadership qualities. I had enormous respect for this man and, having only recently learned of his death, cannot begin to imagine the void he has left in the lives of those close to him. You could not have associated yourself with Jake and not get caught up in the vitality and exhuberance of this man. He was the best!
