Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kate Purchase Fleming on August 23, 2005:

Shortly after I returned from Iraq, I turned my platoon over to Laura. She was nervous as the new platoon leader- especially given the bond of Soldiers deployed in Iraq for a rough year. While it was hard to give up the platoon- Laura made it easy. Without knowing her well, I could already see that she was a very capable and compassionate leader. I could not have asked for a better replacement- I knew even deploying again to Afghanistan they would be safe and cared for with her as their leader.

I soon learned that Laura was a wonderful friend too. A smile that could light up the room, she cared deeply about everyone around her. She was truly one of the most wonderful people I have ever known. I cannot believe that she is gone- I had just exchanged emails with her two days prior...it seems so surreal.

I will miss her more than I can express in words.

To Laura's family, my prayers and thoughts are with you. We are all blessed with a beautiful guardian angel now.

To Laura- here's to one more night of karoke, kayaking (or not) in the rain, your wonderful cooking, movies, shopping and complaining about work. We will all miss you so much. You are a hero, I will never forget you.

Well done.
