Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Laura Weimer on August 25, 2005:

Laura,

As I have reflected over the past few days since you've been gone--recalling memories of our times in Systems Class, seeing your positive attitude and contagious optimism you exude to all those you meet, and reading about all of the lives you have touched during your short 24 years on this earth--I am filled with mixed emotion.
The first is bitter anger--at those who took your life and robbed the rest of the world from your leadership, influence and infectious smile. The great loss that your family and friends, our class, your unit, and so many others have endured may make people shy away from the Army's commitment and mission, but it makes my resolve stronger to continue the mission you were doing so well. It makes me proud to have known you and wear the same uniform--it makes me proud to be a fellow Christian in today's Army and have an influence on the young soldiers coming through the ranks. It makes me sad that you will no longer be able to benefit all those around you with your 110% effort in all you do.
I feel deep sorrow--for your parents, your brothers and sister. Being a fellow Army brat, our fathers having worked together, I know how proud he was of you and the bond you shared being two Walkers in the same Army, having your brother as a new LT and following his big sister through the Academy. With your youngest brother just out of Buckner and looking forward to joining you in the Army. For your close friends on the handball team--those who you spent so much time with, traveling, practicing, celebrating, and sharing defeat. Our classmates who all have a story of how you touched their lives. Sorrow that we won't be able to enjoy your stories, conversations, and life with you.
But finally, I have a peace knowing that God has brought you home to be with Him. You are a true inspiration for me to follow. As I think of your memorial today, I know that so many people will be able to celebrate your life with all the good you brought; the smiles, the laughter, the relationships. The tears that continue to fall when I think of you are tears of sorrow, anger, pride and peace. You will never be forgotten.

Well Done, Be Thou at Peace.
