Be Thou At Peace

Posted by 1LT Matthew Schwind on August 27, 2005:

Laura was like a sister to me, in a professional sense. We were the same year group and were in the same company our whole time in the army. We were platoon leaders together, and in Afghanistan I was her XO. We didn?t always see eye to eye on things in Afghanistan, as we were both stubborn, competing lieutenants. We respected each other though, and we always worked things out for the best and came to agreements. I loved her like a sister.

Laura was an outstanding lieutenant, person, and friend. She had the natural gift of being able to lead soldiers without even trying. Her soldiers followed her through anything, because they could see that she truly cared about them. She would put her heart and soul into her job, and all her soldiers respected her for it.

Not only was she a colleague of mine, she was my friend. Any problem I had I could go to her and she would listen. I could confide in her with anything professional or personal. It was instinctive for Laura to be hospitable, caring, and giving. I remember one time she invited everyone over to her little apartment and made this huge spread of German food for everyone that she had learned to cook while stationed in Germany with her family. It was phenomenal and I won?t forget it because she was so generous to everyone.

Laura had drive and was bound by nothing. She was determined to be the best, and in most aspects, she was. There is no doubt in my mind that she would have gone far and been successful in her career and in life. Laura will truly be missed by everyone and she will be remembered as an exceptional person, leader, and friend.
