Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Col (ret) Steve Shambach on August 29, 2005:

Keith, Valerie, Brian, Duncan and Audrey,

My grief and sympathy for you all knows no bounds. What a privilege to have been an uncle to Laura and an honor to have been related to such a magnificent soldier and family. As I look to the mountains of Colorado Springs, I will always think of Laura for the terrific example she set and how her service was raised up, as a mountain, to honor God in heaven. I know that she is up looking down on us and smiling that remarkable Walker smile!

It is small comfort in a time of sorrow, but a comfort nonetheless, to know that Laura left us while doing what she wanted to do in a proud and noble, and typically selfless manner. Her sacrifice to make a better life for others, and in Service to our country, is the noblest gift a human being can give. I wish for what could have been, but am amazed at how many lives Laura touched in her too short life. Her inspiration is a legacy for generations of future leaders, worldwide. How many in their twenties...or much older...can make that claim?

I miss Laura and will to the day I die. Not a day will pass without me remembering Laura and your family and the magnificent life she lived and gave.

May God richly comfort you all and ease your pain and suffering by the sure knowledge that Laura is at peace in Heaven with our Father. We will ultimately, one day, join her in joyful reunion.

"...And when our course on earth is run, may it be said 'Well, done, be thou at peace'..."

Lovingly and faithfully,

Steve
