Be Thou At Peace

The last time I saw Laura was back in April. She and I had just arrived in Afghanistan not too long ago. Seeing a friendly face in a far away place is always welcome, and Laura was as warm and friendly as I remembered when we were playing handball at school. We had less than 20 minutes to talk before she had to go her way and I had to go mine. While most people complain about having to deploy and talk about everything they miss at home, Laura talked about her job and how much she loved it. She was excited about being a platoon leader and the new challenges facing her on this deployment. We parted ways with the promise to meet up again before leaving the theather. What I admired most was there was no doubt in my mind that Laura was happy with where she was in life and making the most of everything...somewhere that most of us struggle to reach. Well done, Laura. Be thou at peace. And peace to your family. You will be missed dearly. Sunny Chen CPT, '02 |
