Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Trevor Cobb on November 9, 2007:
I was a Firsty when Mike was a plebe. We were on the same Sandhurst team and we were Brigade Champions that year. Twice now, I have been stopped in my tracks as I think about the loss of Mike. I can't imagine the pain his family has been through. I thought I would share a story about Mike only a few of us know.
As many of the graduates reading this will remember, every plebe has a bunch of material to memorize. Indeed, in plebe English we memorize a speech by Henry V. I encourage you to look it up online, its a great speech and of incredible power when it comes to motivating.
As we lined up on the starting line for our one shot to beat the Brits, Mike started a countdown. he knew how long it took to recite the verses. He knew them perfectly. He was injured in training and knew that his team needed him to lead that day more than anything else. He began to recite that powerful poem and energy like none of us had ever felt before, welled up inside us. It was the single best Shakespeare that has ever been performed.
So, to Mike's mom, Thanks. Your son was is incredible.
For he who sheds his blood with me today, shall be my brother.
I miss you Mike,
Trevor Cobb USMA 2001
