Be Thou At Peace

Posted by ann johansmeyer on January 23, 2010:

Dear Mrs. Pena,

Our whole family sends its sympathy on the devastating loss of your lovely son. I cannot imagine what you are going through and wish I had words of comfort. Some time ago I read an interview with the author Carlos Fuentes, whose only two children, a boy and a girl, had died. The interviewer asked him "How do you get up in the morning after that kind of loss?" He replied, "You go on. You go on. You bring the person you love inside you. That is how you cope. You make him or her live within you. The whole experience I had with my children is in me. It is nowhere else I can see. I can see a photograph, I can feel sad, I can read a poem, but the experience of having them within myself is what matters." I hope that you can find some relief from your pain by making Paul live within you in the way Fuentes describes. Please accept the condolences of the entire Johansmeyer-Gutierrez family.

Sincerely yours,

Ann Johansmeyer (mother, Soren Gutierrez, '03)
