Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Col Larry Swift on February 8, 2010:

What a horrible tragedy for the all of us who knew and loved Dan Whitten. I knew him first as the somewhat goofy new LT, fresh out of West Point only to return with the 3-504 to USMA for the summer support mission, he seemed still a cadet...I think the first time I spoke to him I was yelling at him for cutting up during a class he was supposed to be giving...then we went to combat in Iraq and Dan grew into the inspired leader our troops deserve. I remember after a fire fight in Anbar there was a rumor he had been shot, I saw him at the TOC and grabbed him happy he was alright, he seemed genuinely embarassed by the attention...he shrugged off his close call that day...that was very Dan...

It was an honor to be Dan's Battalion Commander, his loss is a loss for anyone ever to benefit from his aquaintance...a loss to the troops he superbly lead...

He will be missed....

God Bless the Whitten family
