Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dustin Mathies on October 18, 2007:

To Tom's family and friends,
I wanted to say how sorry I am that you all lost such a great guy.

I remember when I met Tom for the first time. I was a dumb little plebe listening to him and Jason Hillman complain about the rules at West Point and I remember thinking "These guys are crazy. Why would someone ever leave the real Army to come here and put up with all of this?"

As the years at West Point continued, I often found myself laughing and joking with Tom. Sometimes between classes in the hallways and sometimes during classes (as was the case Cow year). I also remember when Erika and Tom started dating and me telling Erika what a good guy Tom was.

Now during all of that time, I didn't get to know Tom nearly as much as some of the people on this forum. I did know him well enough to say that we have truly lost a great person and a caring friend.

The last time I saw Tom, and I am 99% certain it was him, I was in the U.S. Embassy here in Iraq. He looked to be in an intense conversation with someone who obviously outranked him, so I didn't approach to say "hi". Up until today, I had always looked forward to my semi-monthly trips to the Embassy in hopes I might see Tom there and get a chance to shake his hand and see what he was up to. I am saddened to know that that will never happen.

I am truly sorry for your loss.
