Gregory Francis Zavota

West Point, 2005

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Lisa Zavota on October 21, 2007:

It is difficult to begin to express what our son meant to us. He was a pleasure from the moment he came into this world. He was born with the smile we all loved him for. Our family, Greg's dad Jerry, his sister Kerri and myself, have always been very close knit. We have many beautiful and lasting memories to hopefully comfort us as we try to find a way to cope. I would like to thank Dave Smith for the beautiful tribute he wrote about Greg. West Point gave us the opportunity to have many "adoptive sons and daughters". We only live about four hours away, and would often go there on weekends with our motorhome. It was an opportunity for us to bring home to so many. Greg's friends would come to visit us on site, share a meal, and some laughs. Graduation was bitter sweet, to say farewell to so many that had become part of our family. Greg next moved on to Fort Rucker where we visited as often as possible and tried to continue to bring a taste of home to Greg and all his friends. Finally he moved on to Fort Campbell where he once again graced everyone with his smile. Greg had transfered from the aviation branch to the medic branch so that he could fly medevac helicopters. He wanted to bring comfort to those who most needed it. Through this difficult year of marriage and divorce, he held his head high and still let his light shine on to everyone he met. His commanding officer spoke at his funeral with words that bought tears to all. He spoke about his leadership qualities, but more importantly how he embraced all the soldiers he was commanding. We plan to create a memorial in his name to help soldiers in times of need. His memory will live on forever in our hearts.
