Nick A Dewhirst

West Point, 2006

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John and Dodi Roesler on July 24, 2008:

Nick was a best friend to our son Mike. We moved from Minnesota to Georgia in June of 2003 while Nick and Mike were just finishing their plebe year at West Point. It was hard for us to be so far away but after graduation we were rewarded with good fortune as our home is only a few hours away from Fort Benning and Fort Campbell. After graduation Dodi and I were honored to be able to offer our home to Nick, Mike and other fine young men who were starting their military careers. Dodi was in her element as she could cook whatever she wanted and it was always eaten with a flourish. Nick was always first in the kitchen helping clean the dishes. In spite of Dodi's attempts to tell him his help wasn't necessary, he continued without complaint. We looked on with pleasure as he helped Mike wash and maintain his early 60's Honda 90 and listen to him tell us how his Father Randy had one just like it. We watched him eat Larry's Biscuits for breakfast, a local delicacy. We smiled as he attempted to pay for his meal when we went out for dinner knowing full well that we would never allow such a thing. It was our pleasure to have him in our company. When he packed his parachute in our front yard, it was a thrill for my neighbor Paul and I to drink a beer, ask questions and watch. Nick always had a smile on his face. He was nearly a brother to Mike, a surrogate son. He will be missed but never forgotten.
