Cadet Hugh R. Wilson died in the crash of a U.S. Air Force aircraft on 30 December 1951 when returning from his Yearling Christmas Leave. Ten of his USMA 1954 classmates (Allan C. Abrahamson; Herman Archer; Robert W. Berry Jr.; Nelson S. Byers Jr.; Leonard G. Devilbliss; Kenneth J. MacArthur; Maurice J. McNeil; Noel S. Perrin; and Ronald E. Rounds) and 8 other USMA cadets were on the plane. The aircraft, a U.S. Air Force VC-47D Skytrain, departed Hamilton AFB (north of San Francisco Bay, CA) destination Goodfellow AFB (San Angelo, TX). There was a crew of 4 and 24 passengers - 19 of the 24 PAX were USMA cadets. The VC-47D crashed into the 7,310 foot Archer Mountain in the Sierra Ancha range located in the Tonto National Forest in Gila County, 35 miles north of Globe and 65 miles northeast of Phoenix, AZ.
