Be Thou At Peace

Posted by 2LT Hunter Wakeland on August 6, 2008:

Mike and I were members of Company A-2 during plebe year. I was fortunate enough to end up as one of his roommates for the second semester of that first year and we quickly became close friends. Plebe year at West Point is not really known as a fun or enjoyable experience but I can honestly say that his friendship made things bearable and got me through some of the more stressful periods during plebe year and throughout my cadet career.

One particular memory I have of him that demonstrates what a great guy he truly was is that during the first semester of my sophomore year I ended up with no place to go over Labor Day Weekend and took a shot in the dark by hitting him up to see what his plans were. Once he learned of my situation he was quick to invite me to his house in Apollo, PA for the weekend to spend with his family and friends, an offer I readily accepted. He went out of his way to show me a good time and what was first turning out to be a disaster of a weekend for me ended up being a blast.

Unfortunately we were scrambled from our plebe year company at the end of the year; however, we were able to reconnect many times for the rest of our West Point careers and even post graduation, most recently at Ft. Sill during our officer training.

My condolences go out to his family and other friends who had the privalege of knowing one of the finest men I've ever known.

Rest in Peace Brother
