Be Thou At Peace

Posted by 1LT Bryan Coward on March 12, 2009:

I will never forget Dan Hyde. Dan was my Beast roommate and my first friend at the Academy. I remember going through the chaos of R-Day, finally getting to my room and meeting Dan for the first time. Even before I found out what kind of person Dan was, I couldn't help but like him. For those that knew Dan, he was the rare type of person who combined flawless perfomance with quiet understanding. Dan and I became great friends and turned to each other for support many times throughout Beast. I remember when I was nervous about that first PT test, it was Dan who calmed and encouraged me.

I cannot find the words to describe Dan's actions. Perfect. Flawless. Superhuman. These words still do not do him justice. Dan was a perfectionist in every aspect of his life. No one could ask for a better role model than Dan. He emobdied everything that is right in this world.

I am proud to have known Dan. Every time I saw him through my four years at West Point and after was a pleasure. Dan always made you feel welcome. He was confident, fun and understanding. Thank you Dan, for every moment I was privileged enough to spend with you.

I pray for his family, his friends, his soldiers and anyone who had the honor of meeting Dan.

I will never forget Dan Hyde.

Be Thou At Peace

-Bryan
