Be Thou At Peace

Jay Jones!

It is a couple days past Memorial Day 2015- I was returning from another deployment to Afghanistan that weekend, but want you to know that your memory is still fresh in my mind.

I found out about you, almost a year ago now, shortly after arriving to Kandahar for my first deployment with the Rangers. I was on VTC with Jake Kerr, who was States-side, and his first words to me were, "Adam, did you hear about Jay Jones?" My heart sank, I knew what he was about to tell me. I can't even remember what else happened that day or that week, but those words are now etched in my memory. The thought of knowing that you were in Afghanistan at the same time as me, and there was nothing I could do to help, is difficult to swallow.

The last memory I have of us was during BOLC, at yours and Sean Corbett's house in Columbus, GA. I arrived with Mike Bassi - we parked his big ol' Bronco on the back lawn; you guys were having some sort of get-together. Didn't really need a reason for a bunch of bros to get together and have a couple beers. There was a bon fire in the back yard, and I think you ate a pot of rice for dinner.

Following Ranger and Airborne Schools, I didn't have the privilege to cross paths with you- though we narrowly crossed paths last year, having at least been in the same country.

Far too many of our classmates have been laid to rest, and I am certain more will come before these conflicts end and our time in service is complete. Sadly, it often feels like the best of us, the ones that are truly committed to our Nation and the Army and their Men, that make the ultimate sacrifice, and Jay, you are no exception. Though your time on Earth is gone, your memory is not forgotten. And your memory is what keeps you alive, gives us strength, and empowers our country as a symbol of strength and the hallmark of freedom.

Jay, I rest well knowing that you are overwatching our every step and guiding us onto the path to keep our men safe and our Nation free.

Rest well, Brother.

-Adam
