Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dave Konze on April 19, 2010:

Sharon, Deacon, and Nicole
I love you guys. Even after attending the services saturday, I am still in a state of disbelief. The church full of friends paying homeage to a hero, the massive turnout by the Patriot Guard, and the highway lined with People paying their respect--all point to the impact Robert had on people's lives. These can't replace your son and your sacrifice, but they do demonstrate the character of the son you raised. I can still see Robert up at my lakehouse enjoying last Labor Day with the Band of Brothers. His ever present smile was working overtime--always laughing always enjoying every moment --living life to its fullest. Meanwhile Nicolle is in the kitchen helping fix food clean up after the lazy boys. RW and I talked a bit about deployment and he haad a full grasp of his responsibilities and was clearly read to assume them. RW was singularly focused on his job as a platoon leader; had a genuine concern for his troops;and knew the demands he would face. My hat is off to yall for the remarkable job you did in raising a son with values, someone who put others interests above his own, and was clearly a "giver " and not a "taker of life". He is a direct reflection of each of you and something to be extremely proud of.
I remember another discussion we had just prior to Ranger School and some apprehensions--I simply told him be yourself and you will be fine. The next time I saw him was as he came in the store the day before graduation -- grinning from ear to ear--I got to salute Ranger Collins. Then there was the excitement of leaving Fort Benning with all the schooling behind him as he headed to his unit. He touched us all in such an uncommon way and we are so grateful that you were able to share him with us. He impacted our lives in a way that we never dreamed possible. Robert clearly chose his own path and was totally committed to every aspect of being a soldier--selfless dedication, love for fellow man, love of country, and indominadible spirit, and an intense love for life. His life and the way he lived it was an encouragement to all of us. He lived a life of no regrets.
We have lost a friend and an inspiration--I loved your son --he will live in my heart. I salute him and each of you for giving us this protector of our freedom.
"No Mission too Great"
You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. May God wrap you in His comfort and peace--Dave
