Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Patrick T. Helbling on January 20, 2014:

It is with sadness that I say "good-bye" to a wonderful young man, who I had the gift of knowing as a small boy through his adult years. His Uncle Dave has been a close, personal friend of mine for many decades, and we were so very proud of both of our nephews for attending West Point together.

I have fond memories of Terry as a very kind and gentle soul, with always a good word for anyone he ever met. I don't think I ever heard a disparaging word about anyone he ever met. He was a wonderful listener; always engaged in what you were saying, and contributed to the conversation so he could learn more about you. One of the most disciplined and polite young men I've ever known, and I struggle with why such good and decent people meet with such tragedy.

My faith keeps me strong though, and I suspect that the Man upstairs knew of Terry's capabilities, and moved him up the ranks a little more quickly. I think it was too soon, but it's not for me to decide.

I was fortunate to visit with Terry for the last time at his home in Morgan Hill, and he spoke so highly of his fellow cadets, and how he was honored to be with so many exceptional people.

My thoughts and prayers are with Dave and the entire Murphy family.
