Frederick Walker Castle

West Point, 1930

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by CLAY MARSTON on October 18, 2004:

General IRA CLARENCE EAKER said upon awarding the MEDAL OF HONOR posthumously to Mrs. WINIFRED WALKER CASTLE, the mother of Brigadier General Castle, that, " General Castle stands forever in the front ranks of gallant men ... and will be an inspiration for future leaders of ground and air forces."

In addition to the MEDAL OF HONOR he was a recipient of the SILVER STAR, LEGION OF MERIT, DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS (4), AIR MEDAL (5) and PURPLE HEART.

In the Fall of 1946, CASTLE AIR FORCE BASE was dedicated at Merced, California, and on 20 June 1981 the CASTLE AIR MUSEUM was officially opened at the base for the purpose of preserving the Air Force and Castle heritage for future generations and to show today's generation how the USAF has evolved from the US ARMY AIR CORPS of the 1940s.
