Be Thou At Peace

Posted by monte stone fetters on February 16, 2022:

I am "Sandy's" youngest child; I have an older sister and an older brother. Sometimes if we were not present, Daddy had to explain that he had two girls and one boy, as we were called Dana, George, and Monte. Daddy was amazing when I was growing up - he got on all fours and played "Beastie", became a horse for us cowboys, piano accompaniment for my sister and me, and raconteur of all things fantastic. He created "Everest", a miniature elephant that lived in the kennel with the dogs, and that unfortunately died of "pink flower disease". For a time, we set a place for Harvey the giant rabbit after we saw the Jimmy Stewart movie. Every week after Sunday dinner Daddy would tell us a story - "The Rubber Band" and "Herman and the Lion" were a couple of our favorites. Daddy was astonishingly creative and articulate and from him the three of us inherited a love of language and books. Daddy was an excellent horseman, a writer of poetry and prose, a hunter, a wonderfully smooth dancer, a pianist and singer, and administratively gifted. Who could ask for more? I loved him and miss his vibrant presence in my life, even after all these years.
