Be Thou At Peace

His father and my grandmother were siblings. He was my father's 1st cousin. I called him uncle out of respect. He was a family hero from WWII. He told me some stories about combat. We were both in Korea in the early 50s during the war! We corresponded but I never got to meet him! He was a regimental commander in I think it was the 28 Dv.

My regimental commander was the famous Army West Point all American "Monk" Meyers. He visited my company one day and approached me and said, "I was told to look you up." I was awe stricken. He held the Sgt stripes on my arm in his hand and said, "I'll be happy to report that you seem to be doing just fine so far!! Just keep your nose clean." I assumed his fellow West Pointer "Uncle Bert" told him to check on me?

I know the story was he was turned down by West Point for some trumped up reason. His dad, an enlisted warrant officer, wouldn't stand for it and fought to have his son's application reviewed. After much ado "Uncle Bert" was appointed to the academy. He became a third generation career army person, his father retired to Virginia, where there is building dedicated in his honor "Quinto Hall."
He drifted away from the family when he retired to California.

He was 6 years older than my dad and was his hero. My father spoke fondly of visiting him at West Point for the Army/Navy football games.

Before Bert went to The Point Bert had a race car that he and my dad worked on together.
