Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Paula Browning White on June 25, 2002:

It's taken me almost 5 months to write this because I think it's taken me that long to figure out that my "amoeba" is gone. Lisa and I were sisters, not just best friends that called ourselves sisters, but we were truly connected.

Our first encounter was during beast barracks. Lisa and I were both in 1st company, 3rd platoon. Cadet Mickens sent me to find "the other black girl in the platoon who did a better job with her hair than I did". I hated her right away! I mean, how could someone go through beast barracks with such radiance and beauty. But, that glowing smile captivated me, and it was love at first sight. Lisa and I were inseparable from that moment.

We did everything together we were Rabble Rousers, sang in the Gospel Choir, and even dated best friends. Our lives and hearts were intertwined and remained so until her passing. Even though the miles separated us once she left West Point during our firstie year, the bond remained strong.

Lisa gave birth to beautiful twin girls in January of 1987. She honored me by asking me to be their Godmother, a role that I cherish still today. They are wonderful, mature and strong young women, not much unlike their mother. It is a blessing to see Lisa's legacy live on through Candyce and Charisse, as well as Christina and Nathaniel. All the best of Lisa lives within them, and I hope that a part of her is evident in me, too.

I miss my friend dearly. She's always been there for my highs and lows. When Tim was diagnosed with cancer, it was Lisa who put her 4 kids in the car and drove all night from Indianapolis to be with me. She was the Maid of Honor at my wedding, and the one I called when I had a "day". My life is a little emptier without her. My biggest cheerleader is a little more than a phone call away now. But, I know that my best friend is cheering my on from heaven with my other two fans.

Lisa, I love you, I miss you, and not a day goes by that I don't think of you.

Always,
Amoeba
