Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Sothaviney "Vinney" Pheng on October 4, 2012:

It's been nearly 25 years since I knew then-CPT Charles Gorbandt. He was the platoon trainer/TAC for my IOBC class (7-87?) I was one of aproximately 40+ newly minted 2LT's that he was assigned to mentor.

I remember clearly how well CPT Gorbandt epitomized all that we wanted to be. His charisma, professionalism, and obvious concern for those in his charge were an excellent example for new lieutenants to follow. Either consciously or unconsciously, back then, myself and many of my peers sought to emulate him.

My memory can not recall any particular words that he said (he only spoke directly to me maybe a dozen times) but I CAN remember how he had "presence" and how encouraging just a look or a smile from him would be. (Conversely, a frown or a hard look from him did wonders to "motivate".)

I am one of the hundreds of young lietenants that CPT Gorbandt came in contact with. His life touched all of us and I personaly came away blessed for having known him.
