Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jeff Miller on January 5, 2022:

I recall Major Muska's charm when I arrived at US ARMY FORSCOM as a Reserve Lieutenant in 1998. I felt out of place there, but she mentored me and advised me to be a team player and play my cards right and said if I did I'd retire from here as an LTC. I looked at her like she was crazy, but I realized after a time that she had assessed the situation correctly. When I retired in 2021, I remembered her mentorship.

I also remembered going to Fort Bliss with her for Roving Sands in 1999. She was in charge of the FORSCOM Support Team. When I showed up she told me "ah, we're out of housing, how would you like a pickup truck instead?" I had a nice Silverado to drive in but no where to go. I ended up signing into a barracks of a Reserve unit from New Orleans. Nice Soldiers.

I can recall Anne making fun of a John Travolta movie that was playing 'The Generals Daughter' she was going on about how ridiculous Travolta's Army uniform looked. She had me laughing. At the time, I thought she was a pleasant soccer mom in uniform, which she was, to a point. But only later did I realize that she was actually far more adept at what she was doing than she let on. Her West Point stamp was well hidden, but it was there. She had a remarkable charisma and leadership ability which, I later figured out, is actually pretty rare in the Army. I regret her children didn't benefit from her counsel as adults, but I am grateful I did.
