Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Skip ODonnell on October 30, 2025:

I did not know Larry Strassner while we were cadets. I met him in Buon Ma Thuot, central highlands Vietnam at his C battery, 7/15 FA on April 7, 1968. He had a 175mm/8inch battery there firing the long range 175 mm guns into Cambodia.I had a similar 175 mm/8inch battery (C Battery/5/22FA) about 20 miles north of his battery also firing into Cambodia. We had a good visit comparing notes on our commanding those batteries. His battery was just outside the jungle. Much to our surprise we saw a 300 or four hundred pound indochinese tiger peeking out of the jungle. Larry's battery just got a fire mission and fired into Cambodia. Apparently the guns firing scared the tiger and did not see him anymore.
Whenever we met each other at our Class reunions, we talked about that day. At this year's 60th reunion we talked about that day again but he mentioned he had some serious health problems. We also communicated via Facebook over the years. He was a great guy and I really miss seeing him at the reunions.
My condolences to Larry's family and look forward to seeing him on the other side.
